[red]This is a serious issue that needs discussion.[/red]
In my opinion:
: ) Rarely used and rarely acceptable because it is freaky (i.e. where's the nose), and is susceptible to word wrap.
:) Popular, but personally I feel this is kinda goofy cause again, there's no nose and the whole face is squished.
:-) I use this in a text-only situation because the face is proportional and has a nose.
Note:
I have been told, in the process of working on my online "game" & studliness, that it's best to vary the use of smilies. Of course, you should put down smilies that most closely match your real-life facial expression or emotion, but it's considered monotonous to put a :) at the end of every sentence. If you are that happy, at least try to mix up the different smilies.
Example: Sentence 1. :) Sentence 2! :D Sentence 3... :-) Sentence 4. :o) etc
So as you can see, there is a need for other proportional faces like:
:o)
:^)
=)
:D
=D
And, as Sleepie indirectly pointed out, there are many creative asianized faces that are centralized around the basic ^_^ smiley.
[red]However, be warned, those smilies above are considered very goofy and "cute" by most females. ;)[/red]
It is recommended that if you wish you leave an impression via online communication, you should come up with a clever smiley that you can call your own. But only use it once in a while, because you don't want it to spread. And we all know how news spreads on the net!
That's my .02. BACK TO WORK for me. :D
