Pretty much you cannot go wrong with Canon, Sony, or Nikon. Other brands (Olympus?) might be good as well, but i know those three make great stuff.

The make-or break with Sony is whether you want to use memory stick or not. It's a bit more pricey than other memory formats (SD or CF).

Another thing is the type of batteries. You do NOT want to run these things off of disposables. Period. If it does not come with rechargeables, either get them as well or move up to a camera that does. They eat alkaline batteries like they are going out of style.

Check out: http://dpreview.com/ before you buy (as others have advised). The have good technical reviews. My overriding consideration was compactness - so I can carry it more places w/o a hassel. The Cannon Elph's are super small.

I went into Best Buy and looked at cameras from Canon, Nikon, and Sony. I was in a similar situation, trying to find a good digital camera under $400. I went to Best Buy because they have most of their cameras on display where you can try them out. I liked the Canon and Sony, but in my opinion, the Nikon Coolpix 3100 was the easiest for me to figure out and use without any help or manuals available.

I recently purchased a Canon s400 for $386 shipped from www.electricsam.com. The s400 comes highly recommended from www.dpreview.com as a micro compact sized camera. You might want to also check www.pricegrabber.com for some of the best internet deals. I think Besy Buy sells the s400 for $449.
