Default Question about impounding

So some of you have probably had to deal with this unfortunate experience.

Basic deal is:

Girlfriend sold her old car to a family friend's kid.

Kid has been making payments, signed a bill of sale/contract for said payments.

Girlfriend kept the title until the car would have been paid off

Kid has stopped making payments as of November with about $900 to go (sold for
$2500 originally and has been paying between $200 and $400 per month since buying).

This weekend, got a letter from Ventura County Police (SoCal) saying the car was in impound.

So...the car is in impound and has been since the 19th. Obviously, she is still the registered owner and has the title so she is technically responsible. Is there any sort of "out" since the car was technically sold even though it wasnt in her name? Is she stuck with paying the impound and storage fees? I know she can just go down there and take the car out of impound and bring it back and re-sell it to recoupe some cost, but maybe some of you can give me some insight on how I can help her deal with this. Maybe some SoCal people can shed some light on how the system works there?

I'm in the dark about this situation. TIA.

Simple. Car is still in her name. She owns it. Go get the car, pay the impound and storage. Sell car. She owes kid nothing since he defaulted.
Impound and storage worth more than car? I think she can abandon it but not sure. May be responsible for it.

Just get the car and resell it. What was it impounded for?

All it says is reckless driving. The kid up and moved to Cali suddenly. She hasnt been able to get ahold of him yet (just found out Sunday, mail came Saturday).

That's probably what we'll end up doing. Not the way I wanted to spend a snowy weekend, driving down to SoCal...

thats what you get when dealing with "tenants". the family friend should have co-signed a loan from a bank and you walk away. since you are the bank, you have to do the dirty work.

go get it and sell it. and remember to never sell a car or house to someone you know.
