Question for the HR people
This came up at work today.....
Lets say you have to take a drug test for employment.. but you went to Amsterdam the week before when consumption of marijuana is legal to an extent. Of course you will test positive, but since you did not break any laws, does it matter?

They're not going to care WHERE you consumed the alleged substance in question, but the simple fact that it's in your system at all will be a no-no in their eyes
. Companies that do perform drug tests will almost always take them seriously and to avoid any rash decisions on their part I would consider explaining why the alleged substance in question is in your system in the first place.
Remember, "honesty is the best policy" and the employer will probably trust you a lot more if you admit it up front as opposed to explaining after the fact.

IIRC, since you are traveling back into a country where possession is illegal and you still have some in your system, techincally (and I stress that) you're not going to be alright.
BUT, to say it's still in your system is false. When you are drug testing, they are testing for a substance that THC breaks down into not THC it's self. So they cannot say you have THC in your system from testing positive to a test...just that you tested positive to the stuff THC breaks down into...
Second, there is a work around that people in HR may or may not tell you. Companies cannot fire you if you admit to having a problem. Most large companies work with services that help employees who have problems. Here at work it's a firm called "New Horizons" that helps with any type of addiction / family / etc problems. Before you take a drug test, if you go admit to having a drug problem, they cannot fire you if you are in treatment for it...

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is rapidly absorbed by inhalation and the gastrointestinal tract. It is almost completely metabolized. The predominant metabolite is 9-carboxy-11-nor-delta-9-THC, which found in the plasma, feces and urine along with other compounds. Very low concentrations of THC may be detected in urine during the initial several hours, but tetrahydrocannabinol persists in urine at a detectable concentration for many days after smoking.
