question on stolen checks or washed ones.
I recently made a student loan repayment through the mail the other day. The personal check was for a very large amount well at least to me. $5,000 or so. I made it payable to the Dept of education etc down in Atlanta GA.
I tried to make the payment online but it wasn't letting me acess for some reason so thats why I decided to mail it.
I'm a little worried about someone opening up my envelope and stealing the check and washing it. I bank with Wells fargo btw.
My question is.....What should I do or what course of action would I have if someone other than the intended party (dept of education) cashed my check?
thanks.

If you can check your bank account on-line, watch for the deposit and then look at the check image to see where it got deposited.
If the check was stolen, you should be fine as long as you report it within a certain time period (may vary from state to state).
I think with my bank the most you'd be stuck with is $50, and that's if you don't report it promptly. The best place to check it all out is your bank's website, or just go ask a branch manager.
