Question for teachers...
Import Sport hit right on the head: Speech Pathology.
If his reading and comprehension skills are fine, then there's nothing inherently wrong (based on what you told us).
You can suggest a screen for dyslexia, but I think if he is dyslexic, it's very mild.
Since the student is responding to reading out-loud, I'm willing to bet that his preferred modality is HIGHLY aural, to the point where the words (visually) are having to be processed as sounds in his head.
With the Speech Pathology, don't rule out a family member possibly having some sort of odd problem with vowels.

I appreciate all the information everyone's given me. I'm not sure if it is my place to be seeking professional checkups for Romon (that's his name), so I'm waiting until next Tuesday to speak with his mother and see what she's been trying. What my school does (Neighborhood Tutoring) is on a volunteer basis, like I have 2 kids i tutor, Romon, and Navonna, who is a black girl in 6th grade, alternating Mondays - Thursdays for 2 hours a day. I definitely don't have access to some resources that might be able to test him for what exactly his problem is, but hopefully i can talk to his mom about it. I'd like to help the kid, but i don't want to cross the line...
Anyways, thank you for all the comments!! I'll let you know how he's doing as the semester progresses.
