A question for Tokyo James
there was a simpsons episode where they went to japan, homer bought a square watermelon from a street vendor and then dropped it on the sidewalk, sending square watermelon pieces everywhere.
I think this wants stamping out!! This is barbaric... growing those things in tight constrictive boxes. It can't be a good environment to be raised in at all. This is the equivelant of battery chicken farming. Who speaks for the watermelons in all this?
for what I just find out the square and the round all taste the same.
the square shape is for easy to fill in the refrigerator, and stupid people will buy it just because the unique shape.
don't know thats true or not

Here I am
Sorry, working and on-line at the same time.... didn't notice the thread
Unfortunately I cnnot offer much insight in the square watermelon question. I have never tried one myself, though I know that no "well rounded" meal would be complete without one
(sorry had to say that
).
They are grown in square perspex containers the benefits include the fact that they are easier to transport, since stacking is easier and there is less wasted space. their size is also controlled by the size of the box, ensuring that they don't get too big and lose their flavour. They also fit in the refrigerator better without so much wasted space....
On a not unrelated subject, you might want to check out how the Japanese produce "marbled" beef..... this was an eye opener for me.... at the top producers they actually have people massaging the cows !!!!! Which explains why they charge about 6.5 billion quid for Kobe beef!!!!!
There must be a link to this somewhere on the internet.....
