Ekartingnews.com the S2Ki of the karting world. For $2500 you will need to go used. The premier class for new karters these days is Rotax and/or TAG (Touch and Go). Mostly Rotax or Leopard motors. Run whichever is most popular at your local tracks. Depends on the part of the nation you are in.

You can have a lot of fun in a clutch kart. I have a Kosmic with a Yamaha KT100 engine. It's no longer for competition, but is sure a kick for just going out for practice laps. I bought it from a kart shop with new tires, fresh engine, new seat and new body work for about $3,000 a few years ago. You can definitely get a lower price in a private party used one. I plan to autocross mine this summer.

If I were to buy today, I would get the Rotax. Almost the power of a shifter with the fun of a clutch kart.

Or how about that shifter kart with the Gixxer 1100 motor? It was probably fast enough.

Nobody runs B&S 4 stroke on the West Coast, they are a southern thing. All 2 stroke out here. My Rotax puts out 28 HP and will run rings around an alky Briggs.

You're right, 4-stroke must be a southern thing. I have a Gixxer 750 on my shifter with front discs. My 2-stroke shifters (CR125 and YZ80) were too slow.

Anyway, he was asking about a "beginner" single-speed kart. B&S alky is more than adequate, don't you think?

Yes, but if nobody is running it at the track(s) he is attending it will not be much fun. Go to the track a couple of times and ask others what they are running, then look at the size of the heats. Based on that, buy a kart which fits in that class.

OK fine, just tell him to get one of these:

The $2500 will only cover the front brakes, but it's a start!
