Racing games vs Real life
I'm not saying if you're good at racing games that you are good at the track. This question is for those guys that track their cars and play racing games. Dos simulated racing games help you improve your driving on the track? strategy, lines, etc.
Having done both, lots of track time and a little gaming, I am stuck by how UNrealistic a Playstation is. I thought about picking up a PS2 this weekend, went to look at it and wow, graphics are amazing. But if you have that silly hand control thing, you are TOTALLY removed from the driving experience. Therefore, to help bring you BACK to it (to whatever degree that is), you simply must, IMO, have the steering wheel and pedal setup along with it. Otherwise, there really isn't ANY correlation between the real thing (track time) and gaming.
Is gaming fun? Yes, it is. It just doesn't really translate to track time when you have such an amazing sensory input from all different angles...smells, gravity, inertia, the list goes on and on.
If I do get the PS2, I am DEFINITELY getting the steering wheel setup...I'll post about that after that happens...

I would say that all the good that the game will do is to help you "learn the line" of a racetrack...when to accelerate and when to brake...that's about it...you don't get no more immersion....You can't feel yourself going around that hairpin, although you find yourself leaning in your couch like it's gonna help

When Jacques Villeneuve first started in F1 from Cart he said in an interview that he
used racing games to learn new tracks.
I too used it before I went to Portland and Laguna Seca to learn the tracks.
It depends on how accurate the game is on whether it actually helps.
The games are fun and real racing is fun. The games are much cheaper.
But the games aren't like real racing anymore than track days are like real racing
