Racoons in the backyard...
We found 3 baby racoons in the backyard...the mother racoon nowhere to be found. Where can I go to get rid of them? I don't want to kill it...they're so cute...but they're wild and may be dangerous. Any advice?
Wild animals are usually property of the state. (!) Call either the Department of Natural Resources or the Division of Wildlife (look in the blue pages of your phone book). Chances are the mother IS around.
BTW, how'd the trip to Colorado go?

s2kskibum!! Thanks for the advice. Will try contacting the state.
Colorado was great! We went up to A-Basin taking the scenic route via Loveland Pass. I couldn't believe elevation was 11,990 ft!
A-Basin was great. Got some great snowboarding in. Took a few pics. Unfortunately, my bf got altitude sickness. NYC is sea level so he went up 10,000+ ft in 12 hours. Probably not such a good idea. But it was a good time...he said he had fun. So we hung out at REI on Platte and loaded up on some camping/hiking gear. We don't have an REI store in NY.
Yes, I
Colorado.
Glad you had a great trip. Altitude can be a problem. Usually a night in Denver helps. Some people find Rolaids helps - apparently it helps the blood carry more oxygen. Diamox also - a prescription drug... A Basin is still open - we got about 4 inches of snow just the other night - imagine they got a bit more.
Good luck with the racoons. A friend "rehabs" animals for the state - a couple of years ago I got to feed baby raccoons before their eyes were open! They purred like kittens! He has worked with everything from black bears to mountain lion cubs - and releases all to the wild. Let me know how your dilemma turns out!
Where do you usually ride back east (hence the sharp edges!)?

Rolaids?!? That's interesting. I'll keep that in mind next time. Yeah, I heard it takes about 24 hours to acclimate. I was already in Denver for a week before he arrived so I didn't feel it as much as he did. Good thing too, because one of us had to drive back down!
I usually ride in the Catskills...upstate NY, like at Windham and Belleayre. Probably nowhere anyone has heard of. There's also a place in Northern NJ called Mountain Creek, but it's small and gets really crowded on the weekends. And ALL are ICY! Those are usually the conditions of the slopes around here though, so I like my edges extra sharp for that reason
I actually found some "wildlife rehabilitators" in the area...will call them tomorrow and will keep you posted.

Have heard of Windham - I grew up near Brattleboro in southern VT and went to Union in Schenectady - skied at Windham a couple of times. A Basin must have seemed huge - and the conditions probably weren't too bad either!
Acclimation can take months - but I lose it in days at sea level. Can also pound beers like a rock star for the first couple when at sea level - almost impossible to get drunk!
Again, good luck!
