Do we live in America or what? Oh, this is the Internet - well, for those of us that do live in America! States declaring radar detectors and scanners illegal? You know what that means? We may have "freedom of speech", but we can't listen to what we want to. That seems crazy.

I'm not a law breaker, I've never owned a radar detector or an illegal listening device, but it sure seems a stretch that a state could legislate a passive listening device as illegal. Detectors and scanners don't speed, S2000 owners do!

From the political point of view, though I know it's not quite allowed here ... But just for comparisons purpose. I think it's because they're not generating enough revenue. As radar detectors and scanners provide ample warning for generally speed related offences or some other sorta crime to have knowledge of law enforcement present thus giving them time and chance to get away. In our terms, it's great. In their terms, it's bad for business.

I agree. Cities generate a HUGE revenue of ticket. Just look at Los Angeles.

The story I always heard was that if a cop saw a radar detector in your car, he would be much more inclined to stop you for speeding if he could. To be honest, I'm not sure that it's illegal in California--does anyone know?

Do you ever venture into an electronics store and see them for sale? Read the Best Buy &/or Circuit City ads and see them for sale?

They're legal everwhere in the US but VA and DC, two places I can rule out for future residency.

While there is no specific ban on them in Texas, I believe they are excluded from insurance coverage if stolen during a car break-in or theft.

I don't know about other states, but I called CHP and the officer on the phone said detectors were legal. However, jammers are illegal.

Only Geico as far as I know. That company is evil, I'd never do business w/ them.

They will probably go after people with them because they are more likely to speed (I have my #s here somewhere, i will get them). The cops wanna show them a lesson. Some people are just that lame, too bad they aren't helping against child abuse, arson, drugs, or something that matters more at the time. Detectors are legal in CA, jammers are not.
