Radar Detectors Illegal?
in VA i always used my detector. cops are lazy there and just leave their radar guns sitting ON...since detectors are illegal. much easier to spot a cop than here in CA, where i'm either gotten by being snuck up on in traffic and paced, or radar instant-on mode.
cops say "so, did your detector light up when you saw me?" in CA instead of "i'm writing you a ticket for that detector" in VA.

The story I always heard was that if a cop saw a radar detector in your car, he would be much more inclined to stop you for speeding if he could. To be honest, I'm not sure that it's illegal in California--does anyone know?cal

Radar blockers are another thing. They actually transmit a signal, so I don't think that's so much of a stretch to declare illegal. It is not a passive device. I can understand why a military base would not allow a blocker (could cause some minor interference), but I don't understand why not a detector - maybe they're afraid you're listening to (spying on) their radar signals?
From this Web Site That I found on Yahoo Search....http://www.afn.org/~afn09444/scanlaws/
IF YOU'RE A TRUCKER:
RADAR Detectors are illegal period in ALL states for all "commercial" vehicles over 10,000 pounds! Here is the Federal Law.
ON A MILITARY BASE:
RADAR Detector use on military bases is illegal. Here is the law on that.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CURRENT LAWS:
NOTE: The blinking "UPDATED" icon indicates that a law has either been updated or at least checked/verified for currency, regardless of whether the law has actually changed or not.
District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.) - RADAR-detectors are illegal.
Illinois - (1998 law; no changes noted in 2001 online version) - Not regulated in passenger vehicles, but they are illegal used in commercial motor vehicles over 26,001 pounds (which is redundant legislation, since Federal law already makes that illegal in any U.S. state for vehicles over TEN-thousand pounds, anyway; BUT, some states like to have it in their lawbooks so that they can charge added fines and penalties that would go to the state).
Minnesota - Radar detectors not specifically regulated, BUT - hanging things from windshields not permitted. If one were to put two and two together, then this would supposedly include radar detectors if they were hung from the windshield. However, I suppose one could also infer that they would be okay if simply rested upon the top of the dashboard. The law does not specify that it is not.
New York - (1996 law; no changes noted in 1999-2000 Supplement) - For commercial vehicles over 10,000lbs, and any other vehicle over 18,000lbs, RADAR-detectors are illegal. [This is already covered by Federal law, as well.]
Virginia - (1998 law; no changes noted in 1999-2000 Supplement) - Use is illegal.
BILLS ON THE BOOKS:
North Carolina (introduced 02/14/2001; if passed, would become effective 12/02/2001) - Bill to make law banning use of radar detectors within the state of North Carolina. Click the link above to see the proposal. 04/25/2001: Charlotte Observer reported bill so far seems heading nowhere after recent hearing in juduciary committee.
REPEALED LAWS:
Connecticut - Connecticut's anti-radar-detector law was repealed in 1998, and all the signs along the highways were taken down. RDs are now legal in Connecticut.
That's all state laws. If not noted, they are legal. Please pass the V1 please...
