Reading assignment due the first day of class? WTF
the school system IMHO is very gay. It was a big factor in me dropping out of college. I feel as though high school teaches you all the basics, and college should be about very specialized education. I know that the educational system is what it is though years of trial and error, but I strongly feel that it can definitely be more efficient. I really feel that it is possible to teach a person more and in less time than the standard 4 year system. The only problem is it would cost more money, mainly in hiring more capable instructors. You'll find very few professors that are smart enough to make much more $, but are there for the love of teaching.

on one hand, I could look at it as a reason to complain that the state of Georgia thinks that my not taking a freshman World Literature class is important enough to keep me from graduating with a Mechanical Engineering degree.
On the other hand, I chose to look at it as an opportunity to take an extra semester to get a Minor and a specialization added onto my degree.
That, and I am a firm believer that if I had been taught actual Engineering courses from day one in College instead of this "core curriculum" bullsh*t then I would have already been out with an amazing career.
What if the school system was divided into a bunch of specialized courses rather than majors. For example, right after highschool you take a basic course for the type of industry you want to work in. Than you start an entry lever job. Than you take specialized courses as required by your company for you to move up.

one thing I learn about higher education is life isn't fair. Deal with it. No one is going to spoon feed you knowledge. You will be tested on things not covered in class.
Those who take the initiative will do well.

And pray to whatever forces and deities you will that your job NEVER becomes obsolete and that you never reexamine your life and decide to make a change. Because there you'll be a master widget designer in a world that no longer uses widgets going back to whatever specailized course and entry level (read: lowest pay scale) when you've developed a lifestyle at the highest pay scale.
