Yeah, Alzheimer's is much harder for the family.
My grandfather had it and it was a NIGHTMARE for my family, but he didn't know what was going on.

But to dismiss Reagan as uneffective or crooked simply because of the side of the fence you're on is both naive and shows a serious lack of knowledge of American History. Plus, when someone dies, it's customary to show a little respect, regardless of your personal feelings regarding them.

Does anyone remember what this country was like during the Carter Administration? I do.
Inflation at about 17% and 12.5 percent when Carter left office. Gas lines around the block. Iran had been holding American hostages for over a year. Anyone remember Carter's "rescue" effort? How about Carter's speech that America was going to have to learn to get by with less? That from the leader of the free world? America was in a malaise. Simply put, it was the worst period I can recall in my 46 years.

I believe Mr. Reagan made those comments while he was still a Democrat.
I can't see how this makes ANY difference, IF he really said those things.

It seems as though Mr. Reagan knew well before the rest of us that legislation does not change peoples feelings.
So what exactly would "peoples feelings" be?

Th Democrat comment was made in light of the fact that Republicans are portrayed as bigots in the media.

"Feelings" could be anything. It doesnt really matter, in this case it refers to race realtions. In other cases it could refer to Environmental legislation. People are people and personal opinions and biases dont change based on current trends in thought or legislation.

The point of the comment was to show that Reagan made some mistakes (he was a Democrat), rose above them, and became one of the great leaders of our time. He had direction, vision, and the will to get the job done. May he rest in peace.

To me, a solid leader is someone that can rise up to trouble, and find a way to fight through it. A exceptional leader is someone that can inspire other individuals to decide to find their own strength and spirit. President Reagan's greatness was not only in the actions that he took, but also in how he inspired the entire country to do the same.

Government can only do so much. Reagan's policies were merely tools...they would have been ineffective if the country was not inspired to take action. Something I keep hearing is that "he made us proud to be American." He certainly did this, but he did much more as well.

At a time when it was completely natural to be skeptical and apathetic, he inspired us to build our country back.

President Reagan met a demise that was not unlike that of my own father...who was striken by a stroke. I watched pieces of his mind and body get slowly taken a way, piece by piece. I watched how my mother hired nursing aides to help him with his basic needs, but my dad fought against them...not able to understand that those strangers were there to help them. Speech gets degraded from nonsensical to nothing. All the normal functions of the body slowly get taken away. My father endured 8 years of his illness before we said our final goodbyes. Nancy Reagan endured this for 10 years. I don't think there are words to describe how difficult this is to do.

Thank you, Mr. President! Thank you, Mrs. Reagan!

Hmmm...interesting. Not that I follow politics or care all that much, but...If, by your logic, "peoples feelings" can't change, then what makes you have any confidence in anything Reagan did right to "rise above" after he switched his party was genuine? Or is it stupid of me to ask any politician (doesn't matter if he/she is Dem or Rep) to be "genuine? Could it be that he just "played" along with "current trend" AGAINST his true "biases" just because doing so put him in a better position politically?

Oh, yeah, RIP Mr. Reagan. Aside from politics, it's a terrible way to go as a human being.
