Default REDBULL: bad for you?

So, lately I've been drinking a redbull or Rockstar before my games to get more energy and get my "wings" . A lot of people told me Redbull is REALLY bad for you, but just how bad is it? What ingredient in there causes the most harm/effect?

Anyways i think im going back to gatorades for now.

thanx!

The sugar is probably the worst. High glycemic carbs for sustainable energy? That's a joke.

The caffeine and B in it probably give you the energy burst through the various mechanisms that caffeine and B work, but the amounts in them are pretty negligable. Eat some oatmeal or low GI carb source, and gatorade during your games will keep your glycogen stores reasonably filled.

I read an article somewhere that a basketball player drank four cans of redbull before each game and died... Im pretty damn sure it wasnt because of the Redbulls, but it got me thinking.

There have been rumors about Red Bull being bad for you ever since it came out. The early ones were things like "so and so died after drinking X cans of Red Bull", "so and so died after drinking Red Bull and alcohol", and so forth. Unless someone can offer hard evidence or an explanation that makes sense, I consider these sorts of horror stories completely baseless hearsay.

And yup, I drink a lot of Red Bull (both with and without alcohol) all the time.

There's a note about the basketball player here:

...and here:

http://www.snopes.com/toxins/redbull.htm

There was never any link established between Red Bull and his death. It was simply an association. By the same token, it could be said that he died after putting on his sneakers and jersey.

The concern over caffeine concentration in Red Bull is rather amusing. Strange that we don't hear the same concerns voiced when the guy at StarBuck's orders a triple shot, or when the guy in the next cube goes and brews a super strong pot of coffee. The first link above says that a can of Red Bull contains 80 mg of caffeine. The following link shows that there is, on average, anywhere from 65 mg to 115 mg of caffeine in a 5 ounce cup of coffee alone:

http://www.ico.org/acoff/caffeine.htm

Hell, in 1 hour that I've been at work so far, the coffee I've had has already given me nearly twice the amount of caffeine present in a can of Red Bull.

Bottom line is, if Red Bull is dangerous, there is no evidence indicating so. People just fear things that they don't understand.

Not "dangerous", but not something to be drinking on a regular basis. Caffeine. It is a diuretic, and therefore is not a good idea to consume before, during, or after physical activity. It has also been linked to infertility in males.

Youre probably better off eating a plate of pasta 2-3 hours prior to the game instead of drinking what is basically dense soda.
