Default In Regards to Afghanistan...

Just wanted to get some stuff clear cause it seems like a lot of people are getting the wrong information.

The footage of the people shown dancing and passing around candy are Palestinians, not Afghans. The Afghan "government" does not hate the US. After all, didn't the US help out Afghanistan during the war they had against the Soviets? The only relation that Afghanistan has with these terrorists acts is that the person who is suspected of commiting them is believed to be hiding out in Afghanistan. The Taliban is a group of people who I believe are from Pakistan, not Afghanistan. They are the ones that hate the US. Afghanistan was once a very nice and civilized country. Although they did win the war against the Soviets, there was nothing left of Afghanistan to go back to. And now that the Taliban are trying to take over, Afghanistan is nothing but rubble with people that have no way of getting out, starving to death and dying of malnutrition. My dad supports 5 families that are living in Afghanistan. We don't know who these families are, or even have a way of communicating with them other than by mail. The situation there is truely tragic and I believe it's a shame that the US isn't helping them out like they did the Yugoslavians during that huge Kosovo thing.

Are there not many other industrialized nations that could help out, too? Why is it that the US seems to be the only nation that does that sort of thing and all of the other nations just send a token amount of troops? I'm tired of us being the world's police man and then getting shit on like we were yesterday as our thanks. I know why these people hate the US so much; because we put action behind our words while the rest of the world just talks.

Just to clarify some facts from the above post ...

Referring to the anti-Talidan groups in Afghanistan as the 'govornment' is really misleading ... even though the UN still recognizes the old govornment, the Talidan controls the vast majority of Afghanistan. And as you pointed out, the Talidan is not exactly in overwhelming support of the US and they have habitually aided in harboring terrorists.

The US has certainly tried helping out with humanitarian aid ... but the Talidan groups have forced much of the helpers to leave the country. They even had a group of people (Europeans and Americans) on trial for spreading Christianity.

As far as more direct measures ... well that gets into a whole complex mess ...

Afghan Government - The government we recognize is out of power, and the Taliban controls the country aside from a small region of the north which is controlled by opposing factions.

Afghanistan was aided in the fight against the occupying Soviet Union by the US, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and others, including Bin Laden.

Afghanistan is an extremely poor country, where the average citizen makes $800 a year.

So, you have one of the poorest contries in the world, a militant fundamentalist Islamic government in power, and a debt of gratitude towards a fundamentalist Islamic militant worth $200 million (Bin Laden) who is living in thier country and spending money. Who do you think the Taliban is more fond of, Bin Laden or the US? It's sad that Afganistan is in the situation they're in, but we can not allow them to use their soverign status to shield terrorists like Bin Laden, whether he is responsible for the recent attack or not. You can wish the best for the people of Afghanistan, but claiming we have no beef with what's effectively the ruling government there (the Taliban) is inaccurate.
