Default Registry modifications? how to?

Alright... in my minimal computer savy'ness, I know to get into the registry... I simply go to run, and type "regedit". But now... once I'm there... I can't find the specific file that's causing the problems on my computer!

There is one file... the names too long to type, that causes both my Ad-Aware and my SpySweeper to freeze up everytime they get to it. I was going to attempt a manual removal, but I can't seem to find it in the registry.

Any suggestions?

Need some more information than that to help you, but here's something you can try.

Do a "Find" in regedit and type in part of what you're looking for. For example type joek if you're trying to find something with your username in it (part of joeking).

It keeps locking up on Typelib{024600-0000-0000-C000-00000000046}

(or something similar, I'm at work... and that's about as close as I can remember)

So I did a "Find" in the registry, and it brought me to an occurance of it within a Uninstall note for Windows. That allowed me to see the entire address... which was something like HKEY... I tried to find that, but wasn't too successful.

I'll give more details later, when I am back at home.

Start killing processes in the task manager and disabling services under admin tools. It might be something running in the background. You may be able to remove it using adaware under safe mode as well.

I actually keyed Ad Aware to intiate at start up... before all processes were running... and it still locked up on that point.

I'm not sure what it is though, because it seems to be a part of uninstall code for Word?

Below is how it was listed under a coral Notepad Uninstall doc...
Successfully removed registry entry value: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTTYPELIB{00020430-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}2.0HELPDIR

when I traced the name in the registry... I found these... any seem or look important, or should I be save removing them?

joeking,

It's hard to say what Registry keys are safe to remove without knowing the system and what those keys are for. You generally want to avoid tampering with the Registry if there's any uncertainty about what keys you're removing. However, if you want to try a trial-and-error approach, you can backup your Registry, then remove the keys one by one and see if it helps.

To backup the keys, first highlight the branch of the Registry you want to save. In your case, I would highlight either "TypeLib" or "{00020430-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}".

Then, once you've highlighted the desired branch, if you're using Windows 2000, select the Registry menu, followed by Export Registry File... When the Export Registry File dialog appears, make sure the Export Range is set to Selected Branch. Then, just give the file a name and save it. It will have a .REG extension.

You now have that part of the Registry backed up, so you can go back and try removing some of the keys. If removing the keys causes problems, then just double click the .REG file you saved, and the keys will be imported back into the Registry.

Note that if you're using Windows XP, then the menu options will look a little different. In XP, to get to the Export Registry File dialog, you need to select File | Export... Everything else is the same.
