Default Computer Experts- Need Help

My computer has had some problems for the last few months, so I guess it's finally time to address them.. The major problem is that I can't just normally double click on anything (even stuff in the control panel), I have to right click and go to run as.. for anything to work, but sometimes that option isn't given.. It says it can't find it using the normal double-click method..

Also, when I try to do a system restore and activate it, it tells me that I am missing run32dll.exe.. I am not sure what that means, but I figure if I can do a system restore, maybe I can get back to normal..

I think I turned Safe Mode on a while back, but Im not 100% sure, it had something to do with that virus that went around.. So when I try to get out of safemode I can't because I can't access the control panel options..

And 1 more thing.. My CD rom drive for some reason keeps opening.. When I close it, the light just flashes and opens again, Im not sure why this is the case.. We had a power outage for like a minute a few days ago, and it's been like that ever since..

Anyways, if anyone can give me any tips that would be really helpful, thanks

Did you delete run32dll.exe? I think it's an executable that the OS depends on to run. I don't know what it's doing, but I figure you certainly can do a system overhaul. Others will have chime in.

when you are in safe mode, see if you can connect as administrator of your sys if you have win2k or winxp, not familiar with winme "crappy" hhehe, when ya in see ify ou can make a virus scan, and make sure you do a scan disk. After that, try adn to a system restore. Afterwards, try and do a system restore. See if this will work. Sometimes I have to see the prob infront of me so I can help.

I did a virus scan, and nothing was found, but I did have a virus in like December 2003 or around there.. I can't do the system restore because of the rundll32.exe thing, and can't access any admin options cuz it doesn't execute when I click on it.. just says can't find file

Reboot, repent, re-install.

OK run32dll.exe is a virus/adware program. rundll32.exe is a valid Windows system file used at startup.

You need to get the latest version of spybot with the latest databse and run it on your system. Then boot into safe mode and run it again. This is by far the best way to address your issue.

It is very common for a virus or spyware program to uses the name of this file since it is so close to a valid windows file. Check out this example:

Here is a really good free virus scanner.

Please keep me informed and I will help you.

Does the drive work? Does it ever stay closed? Can you see it in your BIOS? What version of Windows are you running? Can you see it in Device Manager in Windows?

(There could be a lot of reasons if you couldn't tell by the questions... )

Could be a broken drive, that a cable fell out, a setting in your BIOS, bad drivers in Windows, etc.

There is a form of spyware that causes CD-ROm drives to open at will. Download adaware and do a deep scan (including registry). Other than that could be a driver conflict or something flaky with the OS. Also make sure you up to date on your virus definitions, (if you are using mcafee vSCan) and scan again. Did you try booting up in Last Known Good configuration mode?
