Definitely get all 4 at once. My situation was worst case scenario. I didn't mind being awake through it all. I preferred it over all the crap that you have with a hospital (IE Pre-op/Recovery).
Local or knocked out is preference. What's your pain threshold and can you tolerate the blood.
Good Luck
I went twice, took 2 out each time, that way i could still eat somewhat normal. Slept both times, done by an oral surgeon in Gardena. I originally wanted all 4, but he said, it'd suck to eat.
Oohhhh this is a fun subject
Between my wisdom teeth and my second molars I had 7 out of 8 impacted!
Long story short I had 3 removed about 4 weeks ago. Definetely go to an oral surgeon and go for the general anaesthesia, and have all 4 done if necessary. Very easy procedure, all outpatient. Took 45 minutes from the time I sat down until they woke me up. No pain whatsoever afterward (good drugs). Very pleasant experience, but I would NOT want to go through it twice!

i had all 4 taken out.. local... no matter what you choose.. get them all out at once!!!
in addition, the oral surgeon gave me Nitrous Oxide to suck on during the whole thing, so I was floating on a cloud and seeing rainbows (quite enjoying it, actually).. but I was still completely awake and could still wiggle my fingers and toes if i wanted to...
i pick local because it's less prep work... and i'm kinda glad i did...
for general, you can't eat at least 6-8 hrs before the surgery... so most people do it in the morning, right after they get out of bed...
but the thing is... you definitely ain't gonna eat afterwards.. so you're gonna be starving!!! I had a feast before the surgery and that got me through that first day without real food just fine...
another thing with general, you need someone to drive you there and back... with local, i was able to drive there, have it done, and drive myself home...
also, people react to the general differently... i heard naussia (sp?) is a common side effect of general... my friend was knocked out practically a whole week after his surgery... but he was sort of an exception

I am surprised no one has mentioned dry sockets. I did not have any problems but I hear it is quite common and painful.
Do NOT be tempted to use a straw...under any circumstances!
Stock up on the soup. I ate virtually nothing but soup for a week afterward. Good news is I needed to lose a few pounds.

Couldn't vote as I still have all four at age 57. I have a laissez faire attitude with them They don't bother me and I don't bother them. My dentist wanted to pull them as they are impacted (tilted out). He could not give me a good reason other than they would scrape the inside of my cheek. I need a better reason than this to have them pulled.
I had the 2 bottom wisdom teeth impacted. Been like this about 20 years. Last year 1 of them became infected, so they took the top and bottom one on that side out ( nothing wrong with the top one but they said it would grow down into my gums?). I had them knock me out.
Now the other side is starting to bother me.
I have great phobias about the dentist, bad experiences. I don't go unless I absolutely have to.
Definetly get knocked out for it, and have them take all 4 out at the same time if they will. Some dentists won't, it also depends on your insurance, if you have any. Some insurance companies will only approve 1 or 2 at a time.
