Upon reading the riddle, I see that you can only ask one question. I do believe there is no way to determine the answer with only one question asked to one villager.

the liar will answer any question with a lie.

assume the sun is up.
Q1: is it day or night?
Q2: how would you answer Q1?
a liar will answer Q1 with night.
honesty answers Q1 with day.
a liar answers Q2 with day, because he has to lie about his answer for Q1.
honesty answers Q2 with day because it's the truth.

so you get the liar to inadvertently tell the truth about what you are really looking for.

Looking back on it, my answer above would determine, without a doubt, whether you were talking to the lyer or the truth teller, but would not tell you which road leads to the ruins.

Magician found another variation to the answer that doesn't involve "Yes" or "No" answers.
