I understand yesterday they had some password recognition issues, but then they brought the mail server offline. This morning, its still down.

Got in a live chat/answer thing on help.rr.com a few min ago. This was the response to the mail being down. message regarding pop-server.austin.rr.com.

Ruxandra K: We are sorry to inform you that the mail server is still down. Unfortunately we don't have an estimated time of repair for this. It is currently under repair though. Please check back in a few hours to find out if we have any more information. As well, if you are concerned about refunds, feel free to call the billing office. Issue 44825

Hey Randy,

Lemme know if you get a credit or refund, 'cuz I want one too! This is inexcusable - I can understand temporary outages, but this one is must be getting close to 3 days!

Also, how do you check your RR email from the road?

This is starting to piss me off... I'm thinking more and more seriously about DSL! I haven't been able to get my freaking email in 2 days, and I understand that at least some of it is getting returned to the sender as undeliverable. Completely unacceptable!

hmmmm, well I can do more than ping it now. It looks like the server is backup, but where's my FRIGGIN MAIL?! You mean, I get *ONE* email, and its CRAP MAIL? Its not to say I get a lot of email, but I at least get flooded with 30-40 emails of CRAP each day. For once, I want my junk mail. Has anyone reported friends who's mail has bounced?

This is totally inexcusable.

Sondra, Chris, or anyone else on the local network down in Austin please copy/paste the page from the following link. It will not give me access since my IP is not local. Thanks!

Road Runner Austin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Current Status:
5:00 am 3/7/01****Customers in the Southwest Region of Texas (including Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Waco) have been timing out when accessing mail. As of the time of this update, all of the new front end mail servers have been brought online and are processing mail faster that the pre-issue server set. Engineers are assimilating queued mail into the new servers and all mail queued after the original outage, with the exception of the timeframe that the temporary workaround was in place, will be completed by early morning. Later today, the mail stored on the Linux temporary server will be added and processed by mid afternoon. The original server array that failed is still going through its processes and once completed, any additional mail from there, which is minimal, will be restored. Some customers may still experience some delays during the day until all mail queues have cleared. This issue was caused by a failure in the front end server array. This was not caused by an upgrade to the software or the hardware of the mail servers. This issue was completely separate from any other mail issues we have been experiencing lately and even with redundancy, could not be recovered in a more timely manner due to the nature of failure. Thank you for your patience and understanding and your continued use of Road Runner.****

Separate issue: During the evenings, the mail servers have been slow in accessing. A 3 part maintenance window set has been 2/3 completed. The remaining portion will be set up under a separate maintenance window within the next 2 weeks.

All other areas of the Austin network are up and operational.

If you are experiencing any other technical issues please call 531-2345 or 888-739-9298 for technical assistance.

I have road runner, but I don't use the email so this is news to me. Sondra, I just wanted to warn you about Southwestern Bell. I wouldn't do it. My mom has DSL from them and she has had a lot of trouble with it and has had to wait on the phone for hours to talk to somebody at SWB to get it fixed. I understand that not having email for several days is crappy, but I think your problems would be a lot worse with DSL until SWB starts caring about customer service. (If you can't tell, I hate Southwestern Bell and I have many stories to tell to back it up)

its pretty pathetic that an ISP's email is down for three days. I cannot imagine being a business and being treated with oooh, you get 3 dollars back this month because of our outage. I believe that certain outages should be handled differently - in other words, the longer the service is out in one instance, the higher the reimbursement should be - in other words - it should be exponential to the time. Is that reasoning fair? Probably not since you just take the 44.95 for road runner and divide it up by the number of days in the month and then the number of days outage - but that's a bit minimal.

I'm lucky that I do not run a business - but some work related email gets thrown over to my home addys. This is quite frustrating.

I remember, last summer, one DSL provider had a class action suit against them because of download rates - they claimed they could get x amount but were only getting y amount. Basically ISDN transfer rates at ADSL/SDSL prices/services. Hmmmmmm.... *ponders*
