in NASCAR, when crew chiefs cheat, and get caught, do they go to prison? no, they get fined and put on probation by NASCAR
but crew chiefs modify spoilers, not illegal drugs.

again, these are drugs that are prescribed all the time. my buddy got a steroid shot last week because he had a sinus infection. athletes get caught violating a league's substance abuse policy all the time, with marijuana, cocaine, etc. they get fined, or suspended. not jail time. last time i checked these were illegal...

The jail time would be for lying under oath. Pettitte won't have any issues. He told the truth and can go home and sleep at night.

i agree that you should go to prison for lying under oath, just not that it's the government's job to enforce baseball's rules. that's all

I agree with you 100%. I had no clue why they had McGwire , Palmeiro, and all those other guys in front of congress even after they had retired.

Baseball needs to focus on the future and forget about what they missed in the past. Just make 1 new rule - Test positive for any "performance enhancing drug" and get a 1 year suspension. Test positive again and no more ball.

First, prescription drugs ARE illegal if obtained without a prescription. They would have interest in this just as they would someone wholesaling oxycontins out on the street. The FDA regulates this stuff.

Second, they are not prescribed all the time. The steroid your buddy got was probably not a body building steroid. It is difficult to compare prednezone with elbuterol (spelling?). Most of these chemicals are concocted to help build muscle, and since none have ever been tested to be safe and effective by the FDA, they would be illegal under federal law. Some are animal products to grow larger livestock that have never been tested in humans.

You can whip up stuff in your basement like chrystal meth or ex, but that does not mean it is legal to sell or distribute. Chemicals for use in the human body that affect physiology must be approved by the FDA under federal law.

Totally argee. Don't know if they have to get agreement with the union.

I would also be fine with financial penalties for the player caught cheating.

i agree with this as well. it's not cheating if it's not against the rules. if you notice that people are doing something that you don't approve of, make a rule against it and move on. but don't go back in history and try to discount people that you think may have done something way back when.

i still fail to see why the sports orgs. hand out their own penalties and punishment for abuse of some substances, but feel the need to get the gov involved with others. and while i agree that all steroids are not the same, a lot of them can have similar effects, and i can assure you that if a rider in the Tour de France had gotten the same shot my friend did and been caught, he would have been DQed.

Totally different kind of steroid..

Nasonex, Flonase, Rhinocort are considered steroid allergy nasal sprays (Rx).. but I'm not gonna grow 9 inch biceps because of them.
