Default ROKU anyone?

Anyone use it? How do you like it? How much does it cost?

As I understand it, you just by one of their ROKUs and start playing shows and movie on you HD TV.

But you have to subscribe to services like Netflix?

I'm a total noob here, so educate me

Yep, you have to have subscriptions to use most of the premium services.

I have WD TV which is similar but is more focused on local content (ie content that has been acquired "elsewhere") instead of streaming content.

Yes.

That's not the only service where you'll pay.
Amazon Prime
HBO, Showtime

Free stuff:
YouTube
Vevo
Vimeo
(some) ESPN
(some) ABC
PBS

. . . in other words, any given night GFTrunkie and I have plenty to watch.

I'm paying $150/mo for internet, cable, and a phone landline I have to keep to make it a "bundle" ....after I called and twisted some arms.

I think if I just keep the internet from these a-holes, it will be about $60/month. Then, add Netflix and maybe Hulut too?

How much are the non-free services you mentioned a month?

Amazon Prime is $99 a year I think, but it also includes music and free two day shipping on prime eligible items.

I had a roku and hated it. their UI for netflix and prime was junk. If you want a streaminng device buy a Amazon Fire TV or an Apple TV. Both are much better and the UI is much easier to use. The Fire TV is the best device out there for this right now (though there is supposed to be a new Apple TV on the way). It's $100 and worth it. If you have amazon prime you get lots of free stuff to stream and Netflix is all of $8/mo. I have been really close to canceling my cable TV service and just doing streaming.

Lol so the non-amazon device is better for amazon content? Weird.

more like.. fine.. you produce a tv device, I just got this roku like a few months ago... you'll never play amazon content... something along those lines... however... Netflix plays great on the amazon so..

I've been using a Roku for probably 4 years and I like it, I pay about $15/month for Hulu Plus and Netflix (combined) and this has more than replaced cable television for me. The Roku also has a modest selection of free content that's pretty interesting. I like the History Channel and Smithsonian Channel on it.
