Whats the other Spanish word that ends in an "o" that is treated as feminine?
You ask, "What's the other Spanish word that ends in an 'o' that's feminine?" as if there were only one. Here are a few, off the top of my head:
la moto: motorcycle (short for motocicleta)
la foto: picture (short for fotografia)
la disco: disco (short for discoteca)
la modelo: female model (el modelo: male model)
la radio: radio
la reo: female criminal prisoner in jail (el reo: male criminal)
la soprano: female soprano (el soprano: male soprano)
la testigo: female witness (el testigo: male witness)

I do wish that people would keep straight the meanings of "sex" and "gender"; they're not synonyms. I suspect that someone was too scared to say "sex" one day, searched for a euphemism, hit upon "gender", and all the other people who were too scared to say "sex" followed suit.
What was being tested was Semenya's sex, to determine whether Semenya is male or female. Cater Semenya's sex was determined to be male; whether he has gender or not depends on the language one speaks.
Gender is a property of nouns in specific languages: masculine, feminine, or neuter; e.g., "hand" (mano) and "table" (mesa) are feminine nouns in Spanish.

You don't honestly think words have been used the exact same way for the ~1600 years the English language has been developing, do you?
