S2000 vs Miata vs Boxster vs MR2
No, not another of those silly
comparisons. Just something that surprised me. When I got back from San Francisco yesterday, my Dad called because Mom had test driven the above cars and wanted me to bring the stook over for a drive. Way to go Mom!
She finally got tired of the really boring Golf she got a while ago to replace her CRX Si. I wonder which she'll pick...?

I'd vote Miata for a Mom car...
Lower cost, more than acceptable performance, great reliability, low maintenance and insurance costs, decent size trunk, good looks.
The S2000 rides too hard and needs to be reved high to be appreciated (O.K., Im assuming your mom isn't a total gear head!)
The Boxster and SLK are both very expensive both before and after the purchase.
The MR2 has NO trunk space.
I also think a BMW Z3 2.5 is also a good Mom car if she wants a german badge. Service included for 3 years as well.

Yep, she plans on checking out the M Roadster too. The SLK would not be to her taste, I'm sure. Remember, she loved the CRX Si and finds the Golf 1.8T to be a total bore. She wants a small car that has fun-to-drive as the primary consideration, but can still be used for a quick jaunt to the store.
Mom doesn't mind stiff suspensions - in fact, she was disapointed that my S2000 wasn't as crisp as the MR2. (700lbs extra weight and shocks that desperately need replacing will do that.
)
I don't know what she'll think of the BMW - it's been years since I've been in one. Since the original introduction of the 1.8, in fact.
I'm leaning towards the Miata or S2000 - I think she likes the Miata best in general, but on the other hand she said the MR2's ergonomics suited her much better.
It doesn't necesarily have to be a convertable, btw. She just wants a fun car. The WRX is on her list to check out too. Mazda MP3 if they weren't so limited production. What else could she look out? (Too bad we don't get TVR here in the States.
