S2000 vs Miata vs Boxster vs MR2
We actually had a fun time today test driving several cars. First, an Audi TT quatro turbo coupe. Nice power, bad turbo lag, very comfortable, good ride, bad understeer. For what it tries to be, it succedes wonderfully. For what Mom's looking for, it's not that close. Best sales experience of the day, btw. (We know the salesguy. We see him in his Boxster at PCA DEs all the time.)
Second, a 9900mile used MR2 Spyder. Mom said "After the S2000 and Audi, it's slow. <pout>" Yeah, not very exciting in the power department. And while I could tell it is a good bit lighter than the stook, the suspension felt pretty sloppy. I wasn't too impressed. Of course, it was used, which might have a lot to do with it. Oh, the price? $25k or $26k.
MSRP new? $24k.
Entirely not worth the price, IMO. Idiot sales guy, too.
Third and finally, Miata LS with the 6-speed. Yummy. Great ride, great handling, a transmission nearly as good as mine - even seemed a bit faster than the MR2. (Still needs a supercharger.
) Seemed like there was some chassis flex, but nothing extreme. I don't want to unduely influence Mom, but I definitely had to tell her how impressed I was. I think she's leaning towards the MX5 now.
Swapped cars with Dad (Boxster S) on the way back to their house. Ahead of the Miata, it's a close second behind the S2000. Dad's car isn't set up as extreme as mine. Kumho street tires and minimal front camber, so it understeered compared to the stooks neutral with a hint of oversteer.
Question about the Miata - does anybody know how much different the optional Bilstien shocks are? Mom's looking to get the LS with the optional 6spd, ABS and suspension.
