These sorts of things will always happen, be it woth guns, knives, or cars, but I want to live in a world where such an incident appears as the headline on the front page rather than on page three in todays listings of 'Killing Sprees and Massacres'.
Very well said. Unfortunately, not all people see it that way. I think it's pretty disgusting that the media and people eat this up so much though. When Dale Earnhardt died, someone mentioned others making money off of that tragedy. To me, the media glorifying all the bad things that go on in this world only helps perpetuate the problem.

Great, all we have to do now is add the abortion issue and we've got the big three.

I'm not a big believer in capitol punishment. I think if you couldn't throw the switch yourself (of course you could if your kid was the victim, but what if you didn't know them) you shouldn't advocate the process.

When Martin Bryant went on a rampage and shot 24 people dead in Port Arthur there were howles of 'Bring back the death penalty'. Fine I guess, saves tax payers some money (although with the appeals process it probably costs more than a life sentence). But how do we as a society really benefit from it? It doesn't promote the value of human life, it only serves as a warning to other would be offenders, who, if they were thinking rationally enough to understand the consequences probably would be thinking rationally enough not to pick up the gun in the first place.

I don't want to live in a world were every second person wants to kill me but doesn't, only because they might get the chair (or needle, or gas, whatever).

Martin Bryant was a lonely person. He would book return flights to the US just so he would have someone to talk to for the long haul. He had lots a problems which should have been noticed and dealt with before 24 people had to die.

So how about this. We use Martin Bryant as a guinea pig. We test him, research his backgound, find his chemical imbalances and make some advancements in 1)detecting this type of disorder in others 2) perhaps even curing it. What happens to the offender in the meantime is of no great consequence in my opinion, but that doesn't mean we need to be cruel.

Remember back when most of us were in school? Whats the worst thing that took place? A headlock? Now its guns, knives, Gang beatings!! I hasten to mention much on my views of guns, as I know it's contorversial, but IMO, figure if this kid didn't have access to a gun and decided to go in and stab some kids with a knife he got out of the kitchen drawer. How many people do you think he could have injured before being stopped? I am willing to bet a lot less then 14. If I saw a guy starting to hack on some people with a knife I would most likely try to subdue him. If he had a gun, I would be kneeling down in a corner, behind a chair, hoping with my fingers crossed that he misses me.

When I was growing up I was picked on alot. I was pretty small, and would be considered spoiled. A perfect target. Yet instead of going on a rampage, my parents noticed my troubles, sent me to Karate lessons, bought me a guitar and I focused my anger towards these things. I owe alot to my parents being attentive. This kids troubles started long before this action. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

i can't say i thought this just a few years ago, but now i am a very strong supporter of child and adolescent mental health treatment. some kids just don't have the capacity to brush off things from their peers, and having lots of spare time to sit around and think about all the shit that people say to them only makes it worse.

yes tv is the problem, yes video games are the problem, yes lack of parenting is the problem, yes easy access to guns is the problem.

it's all the problem if you have a child that has had his care of the world and of himself stripped away by the hell that this place is.

I'm very much for capital punishment. Aus, I think that by giving people the ultimate punishment for their crimes, we are showing that we do value life...the lives of their victims. I would personally be very glad to execute anyone who has ever actually committed 1st degree murder (I know it sounds sick, but it's making the world a better place, and I'm all for that).

There are some people that just don't deserve to live anymore...John William King dragged a black man to death, and after his trial, was asked if he had anything to say to the family. His answer was a lewd gesture. For people like him, I say screw the appeals and just kill him. I also saw another story of a man who killed over 70 people, but one 11 year old survived and was able to get him convicted. The extent of his crimes were so sickening that I won't mention them here, but my point is that some people will never be reformed, regardless of what help they are given.

Blaming others for the acts of an individual is very easy. Getting the individual to take responsibility for his or her own actions is often difficult. Viewing the prepetrator as victim is a psychological indulgence that society can no longer afford. This young man, fifteen, was charged as and will be tried as an adult. This is indeed sad, but necessary, since his problems were not recognized sooner.

My question was not...How do we perpetuate killing, but it is how do we stop it, playing God can be a very tricky thing.
