What's the point in having a door man? Are people really that lazy that they can't open their own door?

it's a Manhattan thing. They don't pump their own gas, either.

Some people ARE actually like that. At my previous apt, the doormen would talk to me about some nasty tenants. Some didn't like it if the doormen didn't open their door in time. Some complained to mgt about the doormen listening to Yankees game on the radio. For me, it's more of a security thing.

Now, on the other hand, the "extortion" comes at the end of the year. If you don't tip the super and the doormen adequately, expect "delays" if something breaks in your apt and don't expect the doormen to get up and open the door for you. My co-worker's ex tips $200 per person, which went well over $1,000 at the end of the year. Of course he gets first-rate service, gets called "Mr. xxxxx" whenever he's in the lobby and things are taken care of.

I hope I don't ever have a doorman! It's like the guy in the bathroom handing out paper towels!

not necesarily. treat them right and they'll bend over backwards to give you good service.

Yeah, it sounds like paying them off is the way to get them to do their jobs. So people already pay obscene HOA fees to pay their salaries and then have to give them an annual bonus on top of that to get them to do their jobs. What is great service? They open the door all of the way and hold it open while you walk through it? I don't know how I've survived all of these years opening my own doors!!!
