I either put a slash of distilled water or a small ice cube into the glass. That's with sipping run or whiskey.

I'm not much of a Scotch drinker, but when I do it's either Chivas (my friend has like 5 handles of this stuff) or Glenlivet

Johnnie Black is my standard, everyday sipper, but that's blended territory.

Many mentioned above are outstanding, including the higher end Maccallans, Lagavulin, etc. Oban is very nice if you like the peaty stuff. Very easy to gradually immerse yourself with milder taste and reduced cost by starting with higher end (10 yr+) Dewar's, Glenfiddich, etc.

Enjoy!!

I think I am going to get a small bottle of Jonnie Walker Red for tonight. Will this be a decent starter?

I'd say stay away from the blends. Go with a good single malt. Beginners might want to try out a good Speyside or Islay(if you're more adventouros). SOme good brands are Macallan and Bowmore. A good Islay is Lagavulin or Laphroiag. I hear good things about Oban as well.

You're looking at anywhere from $25 Macallan 10yr to $90 Lagavulin.

I'm not a fan at all of any of the blends so my recommendations may be slightly biased You just get so much more complexity and flavor from a single.

Bumping this thread for a question.

Does anyone know the difference between 12yo and 15yo Balvenie (besides three years and price )? I've been drinking the 12yo and am enjoying it, but I was thinking of trying the 15yo for a change...

I picked up a bottle of it yesterday (on sale too!) and had some last night. It definitely had a stronger nose to it, but the taste wasn't that much different (maybe a little smokier). I also noticed that it had a higher alcohol content (4% more). I would recommend it though
