Is Shaq a racist? or just naive?

SteveUCI -

I understand what you're saying. I *personally* don't give a second thought to Shaq's comments, or other similar comments. However, I fully realize that others may feel differently. A lot of comments that may affect others don't bother me in the least, so this isn't the first time.

Anyway, no more posts from me on this. I understand where you're coming from, but just don't see it the same way. Take care...

There are a lot more things to be concerned about than Shaq making stupid comments, meant in jest. How come none of you are complaining about Affirmative Action which is racism against white people, or the existence of the BET cable channel, or the NAACP. What would happen if someone started up the AET, the Aryan Entertainment Channel? All hell would break loose. The college I attended had a "Black Student Union" in addition to the non-race based general student union. WTF?? If you really want to rally to a "racist" cause these are things you should look at. I'm not condemning those things btw. Like cyber_x I really don't care that much. Too much PC in the world today. The world would be a better place if we'd all learn to poke a little fun at ourselves once in a while, which is all I think Shaq was doing. When you were writing letters to the NBA did you also write your cable company and all colleges that use race as a determining factor for admission? Or is it just the "eye candy" racism that draws your ire?

And just where do you think that overt racism comes from?

I'm Chinese, and I think what Shaq said was pretty offensive. Him saying 'ching-chong-yang-wah-ah-soh to an Yao Ming is like me clicking my tongue in an African American's face and laugh about it. How would you like that?

Hmm...

That's a good one, I don't know how to respond to that, but if I was an African American I would probably not like it at all.

I think everyone who posted here had their own valid POVs (not referring to flames but actual arguments) and I think it's great that we're discussing this - our country allows us to have such diverse views and we strive on a daily basis to integrate them all.

Keep up the good work.

Hmmm....I wonder what will happen if Yao or Steve Nash tries to speak ebonics just for fun in front of the cameras? I think all hell will break loose!

I really do not find Shaq's statement to be offensive but very IGNORANT (maybe because I was raise here and endured alot in schools when I was younger).

My point is there is certainly a double standard for black people and other races when these things happen.

Did you all see the study that was recently published on "Name Bias?" The researchers took "white" sounding names like Evan, Tim etc... and then used "black" sounding names like Shaniqua and Ebony (I may have used the wrong names, but you get the idea...) and applied for jobs.

Each of the applicants had equal qualifications/backrounds. The "white" sounding names got 50% more responses from the employers.

hmmm...

Strike, what is wrong with BET? It's a business that is catering to a market. I don't see any programming that says "Kill Whitey!" To compare BET to a Klan channel is just plain stupid. You didn't really mean that, did you?

I've had a couple of friends who have had their videos shown on BET on Jazz... I love that channel I'm sending in some footage of my jazz group to see if we can get on too!

There is likely going to be a 2nd network aimed at the black audience (albeit an older demographic) some time this year.

Do you watch network TV? How many people of color do you see? I sure as hell don't see many folks that look like me on any major network (unless they are playing "The Karate Kid")

If there is a ramped systematic and institutional discrimination in this country, wouldn't it treat every minority equally? My point with the Asian statistics is to dispel the notion that racism is so ramped that working hard is useless. The MAN is just going to keep you down.

[B]My point is that Asians are newer to this country than blacks, suffered just as many injustices, yet they've accomplished in areas where blacks as a group have generally not. Isn't that worth studying if it

Myth 6: If Jewish people and Asian Americans can rapidly advance economically, African Americans should be able to do the same.

This comparison ignores the unique history of discrimination against Black people in America. As historian Roger Wilkins has pointed out, Blacks have a 375-year history on this continent: 245 involving slavery, 100 involving legalized discrimination, and only 30 involving anything else (Wilkins, 1995). Jews and Asians, on the other hand, are populations that immigrated to North America and included doctors, lawyers, professors, and entrepreneurs among their ranks. Moreover, European Jews are able to function as part of the White majority. To expect Blacks to show the same upward mobility as Jews and Asians is to deny the historical and social reality that Black people face.

I'd hate to point this out...but Chinese immigrants in the late 19th century and early 20th century were essentially imported as slave labor as well. During the construction of the Intercontinental Railroad, countless Chinese immigrants died - but did we see any of their faces on the historical pictures of celebration when the railroad completed? Are their contributions remembered? I think not.

Asians have a TENDANCY to put a lot of emphasis on education, that doesn't mean a large portion of the Asian population are lawyers, doctors, or other professionals. Upward mobility? I really don't see Asians declaring themselves candidates for the 2004 Presidential election; save for a select few like Gov. Locke or Secretary Chow, Asians haven't really moved all that much.

Just my 2 cents.
