Wow i just read this entire thread and im on a wire. Where should I begin.
For one I have always been unsatisfied with the argument that african-americans suffer a different and greater discrimination than other ethnic groups. Sorry had to get this off my chest. I was disturbed to hear one members comment that no racial slur can compare to the word ni$$@r. Someone please grow up.
After reading this thread i'm brought back to some of my fond childhood memories of hearing this kind of taunt.
Maybe a few of you can relate to some of my stories (and perhaps a few others can understand why some of us feel that Shaq's statements are no different than calling a person a chinq).
My most vivid memory of hearing this kind of shi$ was my experience in Boy Scouts. On one camping trip I was taunted by a few other kids mocking the chinese language (i'm not chinese but what the hell) only for two of them to pick up sticks and hit me in the face. I have a constant reminder of this as my nose is still crooked to the right. Funny the same two kids tried the same a few years later, at least this time I wasn't the one on my back bleeding.
I can remember walking through a mall in Memphis,TN a few years back hearing the same thing while others looked on and laughed... it took everything I had not to turn and fight.
I went to go see the movie Pearl Harbor only to leave in disgust as the audience would cheer whenever a Japnese zero was downed or shot. The movie itself was even crap. It seemed the director put the flakey little tid bits of the japanese fighter pilot writing home to his loved ones just to save his own ass. I remember my girlfriend trying to restrain me when the two guys behind me yelled "die jappers"
More recently while studying late at night in the anatomy lab (just days after september 11th) I was arguing with a classmate who decided that we should nuke Afganistan just like we nuked the "japs" in world war II
In microbiology class at my medical school the PROFESSOR made a racial joke against asians while the whole class roared in laughter. We were studying shistosomes One of them is called shistosoma mansoni and the other is called shistosoma japonicum. He stated that we could remember them because the little probiscus looking thing on Japonicum was "like an asian...then pointed to his crotch... while the mansoni is like a white man's .... pointing to his crotch again."
I only tell these stories because i know the asian and asian/american members on this board can relate and understand that perhaps we are a little more sensitive to these kinds of things. When I hear someone mocking the chinese language (even though I am not Chinese) I remember and relive what happened in the past.
I have also learned that racism transcends all boundaries of race, religion, and education. I have heard the same racial slurs from rich, poor, christian, hindu, muslim, educated, uneducated, man, woman, adult, and child.
LAST I want to make it known to others on this board that I have heard racial slurs like "Jap" used on this board and i would like to see it come to an end.
