Was on the fence about purchasing the 52" Aquos, especially after that friends and family deal came around.. How do you like it?

Decided to pick this thing up instead.. got delivered on Friday

Who here can tell me why going to 1080p instead of say 780p is worth it?

What applications out there actually run 1080p and are those applications going to be the standard? For example, HD DVD and Blu-Ray. Are these going to stick around and which one is going to be the standard?

BTW- I am asking this just for educational purpose.

Thanks,

Brandon

There is a lot of good info on cnet.com, avsforums.com and hometheatermag.com.

I did a lot of research before picking mine up. It was narrowed down to the Sharp Aquos and the Sony XBR3.

Somewhere is a good article on the human eye and the correlation to pixel size. I'll see if I can find it. I believe the summary was though that anything 40" and under 720P would be fine because the eye can't tell the difference between 1080P and 720P.

If you're getting something bigger (45" and up) I think it's worth it to have 1080P.

How much did you pay for the TV, and how much for the sound system? I have a 37" Aquos right now and am thinking about upgrading to the 52". Do you have any complaints about it, or is the TV/gaming picture quality as perfect as I imagine it to be?

Thanks

afaik, hd-dvd amd blu-ray are the only 1080p applications currently.

i am by no means an audio-visual-phile, but in my opinion, AT THIS POINT IN TIME, 1080p is somewhat overhyped. brick and mortar stores like BB love to advertise "Full HD 1080p", and charge a hefty premium for those tvs.

i was on the 1080p bandwagon when i bought my 61" samsung 1080p DLP 2 yrs ago. picture is absolutely fantastic, and blu-ray discs are awesome. that being said, a couple of months ago i bought a 720p 50" pioneer plasma (5080HD). it has probably one of the blackest blacks, hence sharpest and most vivid pictures, of any non crt tv out right now. in fact, imho, watching crappy compressed comcast hd broadcasts still appear sharper on this tv, than watching hi def dvds on my 1080p dlp...

so imo its mostly relative. do your research and buy a highly recommended tv, regardless of maximum resolution. unless your sitting closer than around 6-7 feet away from a 60+" screen, most will not discern the difference.

hope this helps

and btw, to Eri_S2k...thats a really nice tv! i'm thinking about picking up the 42" version for the bedroom. and bioshock is a great game!
