Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome...

Symptoms: The main symptoms of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) are high fever (greater than 38 C or 100.4 F), combined with a dry cough, shortness of breath, or breathing difficulties. Chest X-ray indicates changes compatible with pneumonia. Other possible symptoms include headache, muscular stiffness, loss of appetite, malaise, confusion, rash and diarrhea.

How contagious is SARS?

SARS appears to be less infectious than influenza. Experts believe it spreads through close contact with an infected person, such as between family members or between patient and doctor.

However, it is still unknown what sort of virus or bacteria causes the illness. Scientists are focusing on the coronavirus family, which causes common colds, although other possibilities are also being explored.

The incubation period -- i.e. the length of time between exposure and symptoms emerging -- is estimated to range from two to seven days.

So far, there are 2,416 cases around the world and 89 deaths...

It is my understanding that it is the 3rd or 4th mutation of a coronavirus. I was also informed at our station awareness session last night that the vaccine may not be ready for general distribution for upwards of a year. I have also noticed on the news clips that people who are wearing masks to protect themselves have absolutely no idea of how to wear them properly. They are NOT protected at all but even worse, if they are carriers, they are throwing it out to you.
Death usually results from the patient drowning in their own fluids.
Having said that, we shouldn't get to carried away with our fears of catching this disease. There are far more other diseases that can be contracted. And the death rate for SARS is far smaller than for any other related respiratory ailments.

What pisses me off is that some of the political jerkoffs in Hong Kong acted dishonorably in trying to cover that ish up. They just tried to hide it, waited, and now look.

Keep it safe guys, wash your hands!

Sorry to hear about that Seung.

My mother and aunt just got back from Guang Zhou. On their flight back, they wore a mask throughout the flight. Only time they took it off was to eat their meals. When arriving to the states, there was a child onboard that appeared to be sick. No one was allowed to leave the plane until the child was examined. After arriving back home, they both stayed in for 7 days for the quarantine period. Those days has passed and both are just fine. What a relief! Scary virus!

Sorry to hear this, I hope they feel better.

For a modicum of solace:
Sars fatality rate is less then that of common pneumonia, 10% vs. 13% (mas o menos).
Contracting sars by no means rings the death bell. This will not be another ring around the rosy.

not so much a scary virus, but scary tactics being used to contain and publicize it imho. keep on watching your cnn and fox news if you enjoy the life of fear they're building for you. I'll go fly a kite.

seung, sorry to hear about your friends. but it's not something the world is coming to, it's the way it's always been. life's a bitch then you die, death and taxes, yadda yadda yadda.
