Shooting in my hood
There was a shooting yesterday morning a block from my house. I drove past at 11:40am and saw cops running all around my neighborhood but didn't know what was going on.
Turns out someone was killed by some unnamed, uncaptured gunman.

The articles make it sound like I live in the ghetto, but condo units in my building are $300-400k and I live 5 blocks from the most famous street in Calgary, known as the "Red Mile," the busiest bar and restaurant strip in the province.
The road is still closed down and Forensic Units as well as Search and Rescue trucks have been stationed there since yesterday. Makes me slightly nervous that the cops won't even talk to the public about it, especially when there is a killer running around our neighborhood. I left my patio door open to let some air flow yesterday so when I got home from work I walked in and grabbed a tire iron out of my closet before taking a walk around the condo. Was probably overboard but the dude is somewhere and I don't feel like running in to him in my house.

Mikey...
In any city, things like this happen... for what it's worth, if you see cop cars everywhere, your city is probably safer than normal... If you have a killing, and there is one cop car, chances are, the other parts of your city are littered with bodybags too.
Just my $.02...
PS.. You coming home anytime soon?

I lived in a big high rise ghetto in college. Was startled by lots of sirens and my roomates and I wnet to the window and watched a cop car chase for 39 floors up. The suspect got out and ran towards and officer and was shot a couple times in the leg. Sweet.
Five murders in the complex while I lived there. Nobody ever bothered me though.

There was a time I took a crackhead lady in to Tim Horton's out of the rain and bought her soup and a sandwich at 4:00am because I wanted to feed her and get her dry. We sat and ate together but all she did was badger me for $20 to pay her dealer until she finally grabbed her food and coffee and took off because I wouldn't give it to her.
I just don't like the drive-by shootings, and situations where there are innocent people around. I also don't like that it's now happening at 11:30am on a Monday morning.
I actually just booked a flight last Friday, flying to Toronto on the 14th of September, there for a week, then hitting up England for the week following. Not sure I'm going to get a weekend in Ontario this time :-( Any chance you're in town over the week then?
Regarding buying a gun: I considered it, but decided based on the lifestyle we live with people over for parties and lots of drinking most weekends, I don't want a firearm in my house. Even locked away as it should be, I don't like the idea that it's around my condo. If I lived in a house where people weren't traveling up to my bedroom and I know it's a little safer then I would have one, but not when it'll be stored about 10 steps from the bathroom that the public uses.
