situp in a minute?
Ok, I'll be the exercise nerd and take all the fun out.
Scot, never do sit-ups w/ hands behind the head. This puts more pressure on your neck and possibly low back.
Make sure your knees are bent 90 degrees to take the pressure off your low back.
Perform slow ab work out, mix w/ resistant (wt on decline or machine), and mix w/ faster "concentrated" ab workout for faster results to 6-pack.
If you don't get this concept, just stick w/ crunches, it's safer. Just no hands behind the head, across chest is better option.
The current military std for sit ups, etc are all outdated. I just wrote the new Navy's Ship Shape (Fitness Manual) on proper weight training including sit-up protocols about 3-4 months ago, it'll probably go in effect after I retire.
If you want 6-pack abs, focus on concentrated ab workout w/ resistance training. For faster track to neck or low back pain/complications, do it as fast as you can improperly.
For Navy stds, I do 100 as needed by PRT std in 2 min. During regular training, I perform 12-20 reps*3-4 sets of concentrated resistant abs workout 3*/wk. I train my clients the same for their 6-pack results.
Also, if you train your hip flexors, you can do more abs faster in shorter time. Avg Marine can do about 100 situps in 1 min. Although I would not recommend it.

as someone who monitored marine PFT's for years..... no, the avg marine cannot do 100 situps in 1 minute. closer to 40% can do the maxiimum point value 80 in two minutes, with about half of those people finishing with 10-15 seconds to spare.
if marine regs are so outdated, maybe you ought to pass your findings along to the Corps.... fingers not clasped and/or hands not behind small of the neck, and head not breaking the plane of the kness on the up side = no situp counted
gorilla infantry mindset is crunches are for girlie-boys.
