The Bose headphones are $300 I believe. I tried purchasing a cheapie pair of Aiwa ones once for $50 at Best Buy. Needless to say they made me motion sick for some reason(while stationary in my room), and yeah returned them and never tried again... The Bose ones are awesome. I'm sure there must be some alternatives... try cnet.com I'm sure they've got tons of reviews.
On another note-
I hate when people try to talk to me during flights. Just leave me the F alone! Unless of course you have two very big reasons why I should pay attention.......
Sadly, no INTERESTING flight neighbors yet..
The hotties always seem to be in first class.....

I was actually surfing cnet when I read your post

The bose headphones sound great, but $300 is quite a bit for some headphones. I think I'll just stay up all night, take something to make me sleep and hopefully that'll put me out for the entire flight.
If they didn't have them on int'l flights for free I would've bought them buy now, but they are pricey. Another alternative are earplug headphones.
I've got a pair of sony MDR-something or others.... that go in your ear(basically like an earplug, with 3 different sizes) and they block out noise, While not as good as noise cancelling, they do an excellent job of blocking noise from the outside, so you can at least be in your own little zone.
Quick search on amazon turned them up. $25 (I use these on domestic flights)

Or you can try those Shure headphones, but no experience with those, but I have a friend who loves em....

I don't try and force myself to sleep during waking hours. I watch movies, read, look out the window... whatever. I only try to sleep if flying at night. i.e. I stick to my normal waking/sleeping schedule if the time zone differences aren't too great.

My trick has always to take Dramamine...the max amount allowed.
or you could just spank it in the bathroom...then good night!
I fly a LOT (used to fly every week for work for years)
- sleeping pills
- your own soft warm blanket (i get into a sleeping bag liner)
- you own comfortable and inflatable neck pillow
- no alcohol before/during flight
- no heavy foods before flight
- earplugs or noise-blocking headphones (bose are too expensive and big. i like shure e-series headphones)
- soft and comfortable eye shade
- socks (barefoot's too cold)
- coffee 30 minutes before landing
Relax...flying on a plane is surprisingly one of the safest things you can do.

I'm off to purchase one of those neck pillows tonight! And I'm thinking about investing in some of those noise cancelling headphones.

check for snakes and then I can relax...
I can't sleep on a plane, car, train unless I can lay down - it is the sitting up part that prevents me from sleeping. I tried the "get krunk" thing before as well, and I just felt like @#$% the whole flight instead of pleasantly intoxicated.
