Try falling asleep while the plane is still at the jetway, before the plane takes off.
That's me. The great thing is I don't have to try it just happens.

Exercising before the flight would probably be a bad idea as it usually jacks you up so you can't sleep.

Wow - great advice, chuhsi!

I'm off to purchase one of those neck pillows tonight! And I'm thinking about investing in some of those noise cancelling headphones.
Glad to be helpful.

Got my neck pillow from REI.

I travel light, so make sure the pillow's inflatable..and the noise-cancelling headphones...the bose ones are seriously way too big and overprized. Go for some Shure e2c...I used to use the sony nc-11 ear buds and they worked well.

Exclamation

I can't sleep unless I'm lying down and comfy. So this means I can not sleep on a plane.

However, put my mother next to me, and I can fake it really really well!

If you don't want to pick up the Bose headphones, you can pick up any of the Shure E Series headphones. They work great for working out, public transportation, etc as well. http://shure.com/PersonalAudio/Resources/S...logy/index.htm# They range from $70 for the E2c up to $500 for the E500s. They isolate sound much much more than the Bose headphones.

I fly a LOT (used to fly every week for work for years)

- sleeping pills
- your own soft warm blanket (i get into a sleeping bag liner)
- you own comfortable and inflatable neck pillow
- no alcohol before/during flight
- no heavy foods before flight
- earplugs or noise-blocking headphones (bose are too expensive and big. i like shure e-series headphones)
- soft and comfortable eye shade
- socks (barefoot's too cold)
- coffee 30 minutes before landing

Relax...flying on a plane is surprisingly one of the safest things you can do.
Pretty much what I do, but...

- First or business clas if you can get it - always check, sometimes the seats are cheap to upgrade to if you can't use miles
- No problem with a drink (or two) - remember if you are drunk airlines can technically keep you off the plane...
- I never take pills - makes me woozy, but they def work.
- Inflatable neck pillows are great
- Earplug - foamy ones are super cheap, light, easy to pack, and really kill the white noise that bugs you.
- Eyeshades are a must because even at night the plane is very bright.

I'll second that. Shure are way better than Bose. My pair came with at least eight different sets of earpieces, so you can experiment to find what works best for you.

I can't sleep on planes, so I just make sure I have at least one book for every two hours of travel time.

I gotta get me a pair of these Shure headphones - I've heard nothing but good things about them. Unfortunately, I just blew $120 on a Nintendo DS Lite last night so I probably shouldn't spend another $100 on heaphones. But man, I love my DS Lite...so much fun...it'll for sure keep me occupied on the plane if I can't sleep.

my trick is to use the horseshoe-shaped neck pillow, it must be VERY firm to be able to hold up your neck. as long as i've had a few drinks before getting on, i've managed to stay passed out through an entire transpacific flight
