99% of these 'internet detective' cases on forums end in absolutely nothing happening to the thief/scammer in question.. because the police don't have the evidence to pursue it. there are a few exceptions, like that dude who stole the skyline, but he was a complete f'ing idiot.
the only way these 'internet detective' cases actually will end in some ownage is if people go vigilante on the guy.... which is not a good idea.

Even if they have the evidence, its unlikely the cops are going to spend "x" amount of hours to go after a guy that stole $400 worth of snowboard.
EDIT: Looks like Mikey said essentially the same thing as me..oh well.

I want all thieves to get busted this way, but isn't going to happen most of the time. It's cool we can all use the intarwebs to track down douches like this, but that guy got lucky that local PD actually helped him out. They usually won't bother.

Mt High forums huh? Doesn't surprise me. I haven't been in years, but since then it has been taken over by "Broboarders". Bros by themselves are annoying as ####, but put a couple thousand on a mountain, give them some weed and booze, and you get what makes a crappy situation.

Ultimately if the police feel the research indicates that the guy may have been the one who wrote the posts admitting guilt, they can request IP addresses from his ISP, and match the IPs to those logged on the board.
Then it's just a matter of proving that he is the one who posted the messages, or sold the board. That will be the harder part because unless he has cameras at his house showing who was on the computer at what time, then there's really no way to confirm that he was the poster. And if the snowboard is not in his posession, then there's really no proof of anything.

Then how the hell does the IRAA accuse people of downloading mp3s?
they are filing civil lawsuits, not criminal charges - the level of proof required is much lower
* beyond a reasonable doubt -- (highest level of proof, used mainly in criminal trials)
* preponderance of evidence -- (lowest level of proof, used mainly in civil trials)
Plus 99.99% of people realize that the settlement the RIAA asks for is much cheaper than going to trial, so they rarely have to prove their cases.
