And 16 hours to transfer 75gigs? Jeez, going from my external to my onboard with 90+ gigs only takes like an hour. USB2.0

yeah, except mine works flawlessly
I've already uninstalled everything I've put on it. transferred all my files over the lan to my new laptop (it took about 16 hours to transfer 75gigs of music alone)
I cleared out my info from firefox, and just uninstalled that.
I'm about to go through my c drive an erase any left-over folders.
already changed the name of the administrator account, and gave it a generic password for the time being.
anything else I should do? I don't want to reformat, as I don't have a replacement for the OS

Deleting info. doesn't actually remove it. It allows the data to be overwritten. You need to overwrite your entire hard drive. I think it's called "zero out" the drive. You're basically writing the equivalent of nothing onto your drive that will actually remove your old data.

download this, save it on a cd or flash drive, boot from it (if you don't know how to do that, let me know and I'll walk you through it), and run it...
When you "delete" things on your computer, what you are really doing is telling the computer that it can just write over that file, it still exists on your computer and can be accessed by anyone semi-smart or anyone who downloads any recovery software and runs it on your computer. DBAN writes over everything on your hard drive, it uses an algorithm to write over all files with "random" numbers. What this does is makes sure that EVERYTHING on your hard drive is totally wiped out/gone forever so that nobody can ever access it again.
Its free software, its what I use at work when I have to delete sensitive financial data and trade secret information for the company I work for, and it gets the job done right.
