So Is LCD Better Than Plasma?
I just picked up a 46" LCD 1080p a month or so ago.. and love it..
I was leaning towards a 50" plasma, because of the prices were more inline with what I wanted to spend...
but what I didn't like about the plasmas were:
they weigh more
they use more energy
possiblilty of burn in
if the glass breaks, it's history
heard of more sets going bad
and most of all, I didn't like the glare ( I have lots of windows )
but I do like the picture alot in the right room
I wanted nothing smaller then 46" and a great picture... there was a huge price reduction on the Samsung 46" 1080p (30%).. and I could not refuse.. it brought it down to the 50" plasma range..
I have no regrets, the pictures are pretty good with standard def. and fantastic in HD.. plus it's got 1080p capability for future applications.. I'm sure I would like the 52" even more, but the difference in price is 2 to 1 ..
thru my research, I have discovered that Sony and Samsung are probably the best sets to go with..
good luck

plasma
for the reason of the filtering of light mentioned before. Because of that a LCD can't do black and has dodgy color accuracy.

Ok, so there might be a reason why LCDs look better to my eyes.

If you're looking at 50" range you should check out Panasonic new 1080p plasma (model - 700u) Best bang for you buck!

1080p is a complete waste of money since they only thing that will play those resolutions = Blu Ray and PS3. From 10 ft back you can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, 1080i might have rendering issues with fast action sports, but I've never read any solid complaints.
720p- 921,600 pixels
1080p- 2,073,600 pixels
Twice the pixel density, there is a difference in detail and sharpness. As you and others mentioned there are a lot of variables that come into effect though.

I have the 700u, difference from that one and the 750u will be the additional studio reference mode and pro setting mode. Both modes which will allow you to view the exact picture/color before the movie of show was edited. Plus cosmetically its going to have a chrome trimming. For another $500 over the 700u still a great buy! Picture quality wise, hands down much better than samsung, pioneer, and hitachi plasma. Plus if your not in a hurry we are expected to release the 42" 1080p plasma mid summer.
