Some advice on picking an engagement ring

Jeepers, just from a nerd perspective I hope these things become extremely cheap and common! I'd love to have a 2-inch cube of pure diamond sitting on my coffee table!
The price is controlled by a cartel (DeBeers). Diamond price (and value) is merely Debeers marketing dollars at work. ("A diamond is a girls best friend", "A diamond is forever", etc.) <chuckle>. There is absolutely no shortage of diamonds. They are abundant.
Check out a back issue of Wired magazine (synthetic diamonds). Amazing. the 4 C's as the jewlers price diamonds by, on these synthetic diamonds are perfect. From a chemistry standpoint, these are diamonds like any other. If I have the time, I'll look up some websites that sell these big, flawless, synthetic diamonds.
So what happens when you are at a cocktail party and some girl comes up with a 5 carat flawless synthetic diamond rock on her finger that is indistinguishable from any other diamond. But her fiancee bought it for 1/4 the price? Do you feel like a sucker for overpaying?
Perhaps buy your financee a pound of platinum to carry around as a token of your love for her (about $16,000 right now give or take). At least this precious metal (and gold / silver) have actual real value.
my 2 cents.
If you buy a girl under 300lbs a diamond that is bigger than 2.0c, it is going to look so huge and ridiculously blingtacky that either people will think she got lost on the way to be an extra in a Jay-Z video, or that it's fake. My gf is 5'9" and roughly half that first weight I listed, and a 1.5 looks stupid on her. I'll be buying her a good quality (F, VS2/SI1, perfect cut) 1.25c platinum ring for a little under $10k, and it will be PLENTY big enough. But if you feel the need to make your girlfriend look like Shaniqua with a huge $75 CZ, knock yourself out.
