I think I'll buy one just to do nuclear simulations.

 

As of November 2004, number 500 of the top 500 supercomputers in the world only has 850 gigaflops. 1 teraflop would put the PS3 at number 399 in the world.

So you can compare, the current number 399 has 1,800 Alpha CPUs. Number 400 on the list is a computer with 256 Pentium 4 CPUs.

Again, where are these claims coming from?

I've read on C-Net that the Cell processor can do 256 gigaflops. In another article, somebody calculated the gigaflops based on CPU clock speed and stated operations that can be done each clock cycle, and came up with 30 gigaflops.

Pentium 4s these days seem to be in the 15 to 20 gigaflops range.

I'll wait for somebody to run actual tests on the Cell processor, rather than relying on marketing hype. In the meantime, I seriously doubt the 256 gigaflops claim.

Its all CG, they arent real screenshots. Sony did the same BS with the PS2.
