Sounds like TX is a good place to live..
Texas is a very large state, and therefore there's a large amount of variation in conditions based on where you are.
In the panhandle, snow and ice is rather common. In Houston, almost never happens. There are coastal areas, plains, forests, hills, mountains and deserts. Progressive areas and conservative areas. Etc. etc.

For houston get ready for the bugs. Lived there when I was a kid and the ant hills were taller than I was. I think the roaches from Men in Black came from Houston :-)
I was younger and didn't have to go to work, so I can speak for the traffic, nightlife, or feasability of living there. I can say one thing I did miss as soon as I left -which is completely irrelevent here- is how they treat their sports in HS. I went from having my nike's bought for me, free hotels on weekend tournaments, new uniforms every other year and other nice "perks" to having none of that when I moved north.

What kind of athlete are you? Amateur or (semi)pro? High school? College?
Its really something else though. I had a dedicated CLASS for my sport. We'd have "class" all school year (in addition to after school practice), and then there was a summer league everyone on JV and Varsity would participate in. the generic PE class actually prepared you for football (speed and strength drills abound).
Just... a different world as far as sports were concerned.
