Spike Lee movies....
I finally saw 25th Hour two weeks ago. . .
1. He gets lauded for bridging MTV-style cuts with other serious styles of cinematography. I for one, hate it. Stay on shot. . . don't change shot unless you're really trying to say something (don't change shot for the sake of changing shot)
2. 25th Hour, like a few of his other films, have these interjected points of rhetoric. Sometimes they add to the story (Bamboozled, which I loved), and sometimes they detract (The mirror monologue in 25th Hour, which dives in and out of Norton's character)
I think he's a good filmmaker, but not a great one.

I have seen almost everything Spike has made starting with She's Gotta Have It.
I think the guy is a decent filmaker, maybe even a very good one. He made one brilliant film on racial tension in Do The Right Thing.
Problem is he often wants to make EVERYTHING to be viewed through a racial prism when he has little to say or said it a thousand times already. If he could just let it go and try to make a movie that is not about racism (like 25th Hour) its generally very good. Give him someone elses material, let him direct and I think you would have a good product.
I would ask why does Brian DePalma still get the greenlight? He had a couple good movies but MANY train wrecks and two movies on my all time worst list that made me laugh out loud. And they were not comedies.

Why does Hollywood kiss the asses of certain people but shit on some brilliant film makers?
Interested to hear what others think.
