While we are on the subject I would like to do the opposite i.e. I would like to take 4 MP3 files and join them together into a single MP3 file.

Can anyone tell me how I do this?

TIA

you can do it by changing the mp3 to wav files, and cut and paste those wave files into separate mp3s. same way if you have multiple mp3s, you can change them into wave files, and just add them into one large one.

CD EX Beta. Download it! You can take a wav, the big album wav and make it stop at certain points on the album. I use it for long pauses at end of cds when bands put a hidden track on the album. For example, Third Eye Blind - Out of the vein. Track 13 is really two songs in one. There is a 2-3 minute interval for each song. So what I did was pick the time where the song starts and ends on the wav. The extractor divided it up into two songs. Simple? I think so, any questions PM me.

Soundforge. It's really easy, just download the program from Kazaa and open the files that you want to combine or disect. Very very easy.
