Sprint PCS vs Cellular
I've been hearing lots of adds on the radio for Sprint PCS, and how it is better tha cellular. Their logo is "Sprint PCS, the clear alternative to cellular"
Just what the heck is the difference between the two? I thought they were one and the same thing. And just what does PCS stand for anyway?
I'm confused.

I use sprint now and I'm not happy with it really. I constantly lose my signal. They said they have more towers now but I have to take my phone to their store or whatever to have it programmed for the new towers. I'm about to drop mobile phones altogether and maybe get a cheapo pager for when people really need to get ahold of me. Then I can get a land phone line and save some money.
The way Sprint uses them, "PCS" and "cellular" are more marketing terms than anything. PCS is their digital network, "cellular" means any analog network. Of crouse, Cingular, AT&T and such offer digital cellular communications... Sprint does offer dual band phones that also talk over analog channels.

I think PCS (Personal Communication Systems) actually is a different technology than regular cellular. Similar in concept, but PCS uses much smaller cells (so more towers and sometimes limited range), and digital technology that allows more comprehensive features and usually excellent voice clarity. I believe PCS can be implemented with CDMA, TDMA, or GSM. Regular cellular service is often implemented with analog services that give greater range but fewer services and is subject to interference.
To me, the services offered are much more important than the brand. I have Verizon service, which gives me the strong in-state coverage I need. But for my wife's phone, we chose Sprint PCS, because it gives us excellent coverage along the Interstates and the major metro areas we frequent
I think it might be something about sprint and Houston and Dallas. All my friends with sprint have issues with getting calls dropped constantly and very messy bills. My g/f finally switched over to voicestream with me, and her folks can't wait till their sprint contract is up to switch. Literally once a month, they have to make a call to sprint to straighten out the bill. Sprint usually charges then a little, ok sometimes a lot, more than they are supposed to.
