Super OT, but I need help ,,,Fast! (resurrected Big Screen TV discussion)
I am going tomorrow to buy a big screen TV. I have seen allready Mitsubishi's and they are great, but has any of you seen or have Toshiba's or any other brand that is really good. The size I am buying is around 55". Thank's
Are you getting a regular big screen (projection) or a HDTV. I have an RCA and I can't complain. But, if I was looking for a new one I would spend the extra bucks for the HDTV.
Fito,
We got our Toshiba HDTV "ready" TV last January and have been EXTREAMLY happy with it. However, as noted above, there are a lot of decisions to be made with the market as it is right now. Do you want Digital TV or not? If so, do you want 16:9 aspect ratio or not? Our decision was YES to digital - no scan lines makes it SOOO much better to watch, especially with DVDs. Next question - what type of TV watching will you do? DVD, over the air (OTA), Satallite, cable? We watch 80% Satallite/OTA and 20%DVD and since HDTV is a LONG way off here in WI we went with a 4:3 or "standard" aspect TV. DVDs look wonderful as does sat. since it's all digital (not high definition, but digital). Cable looked like sheeeeet so we got rid of that for the Dish. However, if in San Juan HDTV programming is closer to being reality you may want to get a 16:9 set. DVD's will look even better (especailly the anamorphic ones) and even better still if you "invest" in a progressive scan DVD player. I did a side by side comparo with the Toshiba TN50X81 we bought and a 16:9 Mitsu set and I couldn't see enough difference to live with the grey bars on non-hi definition broadcasts for the next 4 years.
One last thing to ponder - perhaps the best of both worlds would be to go with a 4:3 set that can do the "anamorphic squeeze trick". I believe that Hitachi, Mitsu and Sony's all do this. I'm sure there are other, however, Toshiba's DO NOT. Using the squeeze trick your 4:3 set will "properly display" 16:9 information, both Hi-definition and anamorphic.
Whew. This got pretty long. If you have more questions you can email me or here's a couple of links that might really help.

Well I do most viewing on Direct TV (Dish)and some DVD and ( some Playstation). So I think I should rather go with a 4:3 ratio. I have in mind a mitsu 55" ( price over here is $3,500) but I have heard lots of good comments on Toshibas and the new Panasonic TAO Wide Screen. oh and btw HDTV is way far from reality here.
I have a Samsung PLK-405W. It's only 40", but it has a few MAJOR advantages over bigger tv's.
First, it's a 16:9 aspect set, so DVD's running into the component input are flawless and big and beautiful.
Second, it's only sixy pounds.
Third, it's a progressive scan LCD with NTSC broadcast resolution (640x480), without scan lines.
Highly recommended.
