SUV Drivers in Snow&Ice
Have you noticed how SUV drivers tend to drive 10-20 mph faster than everybody else in snow? Any they all come rushing up to you and tail you for awhile as well. They think that their 4 wheel drive system will protect them from any kind of a slide. Yesterday, it was really pisssing me off. Every SUV driver was blazing by even though it was snowing like crazy. One guy, was going a little too fast and slid through an intersection when the light turned red. I thought he was going to roll. Lucky stiff. The funny thing was he kept on driving at the same speed after the incident.
yeah.. when it snowed here on new years eve.. i was on my way to a party.. crossing many iced over bridged.. each one was like ice capades.. just slide across and hope you stay straight.. i'd have these suv's fly by doing 80.. see them a couple of miles later either pulled over or off the highway turned in the wrong direction.. w/ tracks of their recent slide evident.
It's funny how people think 4WD is the be all and end all in snow. They have to realize they can't stop or change direction any faster then the rest of us.
When I got my first 4Runner, I think I spent more time off the road then I did on.

Sorry, guilty on this one. That big Suburban just feels unstoppable. But then again in VA. when it snows people go nuts, they see snow and they think slide. In other words it might be snowing but no accumulation and they will drive 15mph, this drives me nuts.
A sad reminder of this occurred here in South Jersey last week. A corrections officer in a Pathfinder, decided that he could drive much faster than everyone else. (Of course this was in the middle of a very strong snow storm). He started a 20 car pile-up that injured 50 people.
Being not very bright, he was not wearing a seat belt, nor was his wife, but the baby was in a car seat. The driver was ejected and died instantly, he wife was also ejected and was in critical condition. The child was fine.
But again this goes back to that "SUV feeling of invincibility."
Nick, just remember that when you are unstoppable and slide through the red light into my CL, I will probably die, since your bumper is in my window! (No flame intended.)
Please take it easy!

well said Zippy...
Its amazing how many people subscribe to the theroy about having an SUV because everyone else has one and you want to be on a level turf from a safety standpoint... I'm always amazed at the number of SUVs that I see driving around carrying 1 occupant who is usually chatting away on the phone...
Do you really need an SUV to drive yourself around? I think not.
Most people that own SUVs would be better suited in a minivan. I know a few people that have SUVs and actually take advantage of the off-road capability of the vehicle...
I got this real kick the other day... this woman in a black Expedition that had a lift kit on it. She was probably about 5'3 and had a heck of a time getting in her vehicle. She then drove really slowly. In all fairness, it was a diesel so its not a total gas hog, but I couldnt get over the big tires/lift. The vehicle must have been brand new because it had no signs of ever having been off-road. The fender wells were cleaner than my S2000s
