Default Tax in state issue

why can we in CA not go to NV to buy a car and bring it back? do we have to keep it in NV for three months or something? I'm sure I'll get yelled at since it's so obvious an answer anyway.

Hey L, Anytime you import an out-of-state car, the DMV collects "Use-Tax" which is the same as sales tax, for the Franchise Tax Board for California. Its the same rate as sales tax, so its the same as paying sales tax. One way around it would be to buy one from out of state that had a lower sale price listed on the bill of sale (hint hint) that is then presented to the DMV for registration and tax purposes. Officially, mine was "used" when i brought it into CA so my transfer papers listed the "used" price (low bluebook), saving me a few more dollars on tax. PM or email me if you need details.
