What is in a name? The name S2000 is like Jell-O, in and out without much impact. However a name like Corvette is more like potatoes it sticks to your ribs. Why S2000? Shouldn't it be S2, S2.0 or to be "politically correct" a S1997. About three times now I have had the following conversation. "What kind of car are you getting? A Honda S2000. Which model? A S2000. Oh, what year is it? It's a 2001 S2000. I see." Like hell you see. Wouldn't a "real name" be a much better identifier. Maybe something like Extreme, Roadstar, NSR, or Sunster. Just for fun not to be taken to seriously.

What I don't get is why Japanese cars are named after English letters and numbers. I know that the "2000" in s2000 is spoken in Japanese, but what about all the other cars (like "NSX")? Speaking of which, only Honda could give a supercar a name that suggests "No Sex".

I hope you are not overlooking the obvious heritage that the name S2000 follows....
It is wierd that Japanese carmakers use English letters for their cars though.

The S2000 name was derived from Honda's past approach to naming their original roadster. Their original roadster was the S600 (or was it 500?), where the "S" stood for sports and the "600" was taken from the displacement of the engine. So the S2000 has the same "S" designation and gets the "2000" from its 2 liter displacement engine.

To the general public the name Honda doesn't carry the prestige of Porsche or BMW.

To the average car guy names like Boxster roll off their lips easier than S2000.

But you can call it anything you wish - I will love it no less, cause it's an enthusiast's motor car and the true enthusiast's will soon learn about it, if they don't know already.

And, in the land of Mr. Honda the heritige is there as Don mentioned. A true "S"portscar with hot version of "2000" cc's works for me.

I don't mind the name and like meat said, you have to look at the car's heritage. That being said, if the name is the thing that you absolutely like the least about the S2000, then that's a good thing.

Remember the Miata a.k.a. the MX-5 or Eunos Roadster. Sometimes one name is enough.

The predecessors to the Datsun 240Z were the Datsun 1600 and Datsun 2000 Roadsters.

In Japan, these cars were called the Blue Bird and the Fair Lady.

I'll take S2000 any day!
